Donald Trump, President of the United States ·
And they gave us $550 billion up front—100 percent, 500. We get 90; they get 10. Ninety percent; they get 10. And there's no payment—it's not a loan or anything.
Japan gave nothing up front. The deal lets Japanese state lenders provide up to $550 billion in equity, loans and loan guarantees, project by project, with cash split 50/50 until Japan recovers its money.
On July 23, 2025, Japan's prime minister said the agreement was that government-affiliated lenders could provide up to $550 billion in equity, loans and loan guarantees, through JBIC and NEXI, with actual amounts set as financing proceeds (Prime Minister's Office of Japan, press remarks, July 23, 2025). The signed memorandum has Japan fund each project only after it is selected, from time to time until January 19, 2029, and splits cash flows 50/50 until Japan has recovered its money, then 90/10 (US-Japan MOU on Strategic Investments, Sept. 4, 2025).
