What did Donald Trump claim about immigration on 22 Oct 2020?
Donald Trump, President of the United States and Republican presidential nominee ·
Catch and release is a disaster. A murderer would come in, a rapist would come in, a very bad person would come in -- we would take their name, we have to release them into our country. And then you say they come back. Less than 1% of the people come back.
Far more than 1 percent came back. In fiscal 2020, judges ordered removal for not appearing in 49 percent of completed cases, not the more than 99 percent his claim implies.
The Justice Department's immigration court agency reported that, excluding detained cases outside the Remain in Mexico program, immigration judges issued removal orders in absentia, because the person did not appear, in 34 percent of initial case completions in fiscal 2014 and 49 percent in fiscal 2020. In fiscal 2020 that was 86,555 of 175,127 completed cases (Executive Office for Immigration Review, Comparison of In Absentia Rates, data generated Oct. 13, 2020).
