What did Donald Trump claim about foreign policy on 27 Aug 2020?
Donald Trump, President of the United States and Republican presidential nominee ·
Our NATO partners, as an example, were very far behind in their defense payments. But at my strong urging, they agreed to pay $130 billion more a year the first time in over 20 years that they upped their payments. And this $130 billion will ultimately go to $400 billion a year.
Not per year. NATO said $130 billion was the total extra since 2016 and $400 billion the projected total by 2024, and called 2019 the fifth straight year of increases.
NATO described both figures as cumulative, not yearly: by the end of 2020, European Allies and Canada 'will have invested $130 billion more since 2016', and the accumulated increase by the end of 2024 was projected at $400 billion. NATO also called 2019 'the fifth consecutive year of growth' in their defense spending (NATO, 'NATO Secretary General announces increased defence spending by Allies', November 29, 2019).
