Murkowski said in 2016 an election-year vacancy should be left to the next administration. In 2020 she opposed advancing Barrett's nomination, then, after losing those votes, voted to confirm her eight days before the election.
In March 2016 Murkowski said a vacancy arising in the middle of a presidential election should have been left to the next administration. In October 2020 she said the Senate should not take up a nomination so close to a presidential election and voted against advancing Amy Coney Barrett's nomination, including on cloture; after losing those votes, she voted to confirm Barrett eight days before the election, saying her responsibility then was to judge Barrett's qualifications, which she found met.
