What did Donald Trump claim about government spending on 21 Feb 2025?
Donald Trump, President of the United States ·
And $21 million going to my friend Prime Minister Modi in India for voter turnout. We're giving $21 million for voter turnout in India.
The $21 million was not for India. It paid for a voter program in Bangladesh, and federal spending records show no award to that group performed in India.
The $21 million federal voter-participation award to the Consortium for Elections and Political Process Strengthening (CEPPS) was USAID's 'Amar Vote Amar' activity in Bangladesh (award 72038822LA00001, August 2022 to July 2025). USAspending lists no CEPPS award performed in India from fiscal 2008 through 2025; the only awards performed in India described as voter work are two USAID research grants totalling $296,682 for voter-information campaigns in Delhi, 2010 to 2013 (USAspending.gov).
