What did Donald Trump claim about the economy on 11 Jun 2019?
Donald Trump, President of the United States ·
Just recently reached an agreement to eliminate restrictions and expand exports of American beef—you saw that—to Japan by up to $200 million a year. You saw that. There's somebody selling beef over there. They haven't bought our beef since the year 2000.
Japan had been buying U.S. beef for years. It banned U.S. beef in December 2003 after a mad cow case, reopened partly in December 2005, widened access in February 2013, and by 2019 was the top market for U.S. beef. The May 2019 deal removed the last age limits.
USDA's release on the May 2019 agreement says it opened the way 'for expanded sales to the United States' top global beef market', and that Japan banned U.S. beef in December 2003, 'restored partial access for U.S. beef muscle cuts and offal items' in December 2005, and extended access in February 2013.
