What did Donald Trump claim about the military on 19 Dec 2018?
Donald Trump, President of the United States ·
We have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency.
Not yet. ISIS still held territory in Syria when he posted, and its last village, Baghuz, fell only on March 23, 2019.
ISIS still held territory in Syria when he posted. For October-December 2018 the inspectors general reported that ISIS 'has established a strong defensive position in its remaining territory in Syria' and in late December 'temporarily gained about 10 miles of territory near the Iraqi border', and the Pentagon told them that without counterterrorism pressure ISIS 'could likely resurge in Syria within six to twelve months'. U.S.-backed Syrian forces took ISIS's last territory, the village of Baghuz, on March 23, 2019, which 'completed the territorial defeat of ISIS in Iraq and Syria' (Lead Inspector General for Operation Inherent Resolve, reports to Congress for October-December 2018 and January-March 2019).
