The U.S. had exported energy for decades and had been a net energy exporter as recently as 1952. In 2018 it was still a net importer.
EIA reported that 2019 'was the first year when the U.S. exported more energy than it imported since 1952,' and that U.S. net energy trade went 'from 3.6 quads of net imports in 2018 to 0.8 quads of net exports in 2019' (U.S. Energy Information Administration, Today in Energy, April 20, 2020).
